What are Health Benefits and Implications of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)?

The fermented sour apple juice – Apple Cider Vinegar – ACV contains alcohol which is achieved by adding yeast to the juice the natural sugar present in them is converted into alcohol. Then from alcohol to acetic acid. The name Apple Cider Vinegar simply means ” sour wine of apple”.
Over the years, Apple Cider Vinegar has been used for several purposes such as the killing of fungus, bacteria and other traditional purposes. But in recent times,  there’s shit in its usage from mere traditional purposes to health care purposes mainly – weight loss.

How Can You Use Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) For Health Benefits?

Apple Cider Vinegar can be taken in different ways based on individual preference. While Some individuals prefer it added to their morning tea, some use it as a preservative in their pastries and in cooked foods.
Some people, especially those who are on weight loss target or other health reasons incorporate it to their diet or take it in other liquids once or twice daily.
Dated back to the days of Hippocrates, Vinegar has continued to be useful although lacked scientific back up compared to the modern times.
In recent times, researchers have found that acetic acid percent in Vinegar and the sole reason for its distinctive smell and taste can be useful in several amazing ways.

According to, Apple Cider Vinegar decreases insulin level and lowers blood sugar level. It’s properties protect the body from accumulating unwanted fat thereby suppressing weight gain.
A study of 175 people who drank one or two tablespoons of ACV for three months revealed a change in body weight of 2.6 and 3.7 pounds respectively.
Those who drank two tablespoons a day; that is a spoon at a time experienced more weight loss when compared to those two took a spoon daily.
Also, a study published in the US National Library of Medicine said that the sour juice -ACV enhances metabolism thereby speeding up the rate at which the body burns fat.
Yet, another study was conducted. The sour juice was used on rats, the result proved a reduction in belly fat and in time, a stop in unwanted fat accumulation.
Vinegar has also been said to contain vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and polyphenols which reduce cell damage because of it’s antioxidant plus taking care of other diseases.

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Have Side Effects?

Reasonably, too much of everything is bad so intake of too much vinegar undoubtedly has some health implications.

Alter Blood Sugar Regulation.

Scientists have found that too much intake of apple cider Vinegar affects the way the body regulates blood negatively.
Thus, it is recommended that individuals with diabetics should consult their doctors before consuming Apple Cider Vinegar both in their diets or as a diluted drink.
Hence, further result is needed on this subject as no concrete back up to this claim has been released by the scientist.

Skin Irritation and Burn.

Both the National Capital Poison Center and the Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology have incidences of serious skin burn obtained after applying Apple Cider Vinegar on the skin.

Obviously, having direct contact with undiluted Vinegar causes skin irritation and skin burn.

Hypokalemia Issues.

An individual with low potassium ( hypokalemia) will hardly experience muscle weakness compared to one with moderate or severe symptoms of low potassium who experiences muscle weakness and even paralysis.

Tooth decay.

Taking undiluted Vinegar exposes you to the risk of tooth decay just like the consumption of other acidic foods over time.
The tooth will gradually decay and develop cavities then will require filling. Gastrointestinal Issues.

Some of these issues include heartburn, diarrhea, indigestion among others. They are common due to the acidic nature of the solution and more common if used for detoxification.

Throat Irritation.

Oral usage of ACV for a prolonged period of time causes irritation to the throat due to the presence of acetic acid in the sour juice.

Undoubtedly, there must be some ways of combating the negative effects of Vinegar. Below are some of them listed.
(1) Do not take an undiluted vinegar; always dilute it with water or other beverages such as tea before consumption.
(2) Be reasonable as to the quantity you consume. Consuming about 15 milliliters per day will yield the desired health benefit – A study review.
(3)Do not expose your skin to undiluted vinegar to avoid irritation and burn.
(4) Limit the number of times you expose your teeth to Vinegar. You can pour in the diluted juice straight into the throat by holding your head back or better with a straw for more comfort.
(5) Generously dilute ACV or better add to your meal as a flavor to avoid possible negative implications.
(6) Use pasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar if pregnant or lactating.

How to make Apple Cider Vinegar Drink:

I personally, prefer the lemon version of the drink because the mixture gives me the taste of a lemonade Plus the mood boost that goes with lemon juice.
It does not require many recipes to be prepared; all you need is the organic Apple Cider Vinegar( mother), water, lemon, and honey as a sweetener.
You can also use stevia in the place of honey if that goes down well with you or use other variations of flavors such as ginger juice, orange juice, pomegranate juice among others.

Can Pregnant and Lactating Mothers Drink ACV?

Researchers have suggested that pregnant women should apply caution in their consumption of ACV due to the presence of probiotics.
However, it is recommended that pregnant and lactating women who choose to use ACV should go for the pasteurized version of it to avoid causing harm to their fetus and newborn.
Again, pregnant women should avoid vinegar with the ‘mother’ to ensure the safety of their fetus.
Ultimately, there is no concrete research to prove that ACV is safe or harmful during pregnancy and pregnant women have been using it with no record of complication.


Apple Cider Vinegar can be enjoyed in many different ways. Do not take the sour juice undiluted to avoid losing the many benefits of it.
