What is Alkaline Water?
You might have read about many health benefits of alkaline water. Some advocates of alkaline water claim it slows down aging, mitigates cancer risk, and even regulate the PH (potential of hydrogen) level. If you have wondered what exactly alkaline water is, worry no more we are going to break every detail for you in this article.
Alkaline simple refers to the PH (potential of hydrogen) of the water. It ranges from 0 to 14. The PH, on the other hand, is a scale that measures whether the water is acidic, neutral or alkaline. At PH of 1, the water is very acidic, when at 7, the water is neural and contains much alkaline when at  PH of 14.
Alkaline water contains PH higher than 7 which is a normal PH for our regular drinking water. Because of its state in the alkaline scale, advocates of alkaline water believe it is capable of neutralizing acid in the body. However,  PH alone cannot be used to determine true alkalinity of water. For water to be truly alkaline, it must contain alkaline minerals and antioxidants. The more negative ORP (oxidation reduction potential) it is, the more antioxidizing the water is.
Does Alkaline Water work?
According to many health professionals, there isn’t yet enough research to back that ideology. Thus, the issue remains somewhat controversial. Again, according to Mayo Clinic, there is no scientific evidence to back their claims and water with a PH of 7  remains the best. Notwithstanding,  few studies have suggested some benefits of alkaline water.
A study conducted in 2012 found that drinking natural carbonated artesian alkaline water with a PH of 8.8 mitigates pepsin, the enzyme responsible for acid reflux.
Yet another study revealed that alkaline-based water is good for people living with diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
A recent study conducted with 100 people revealed that alkaline reduces blood viscosity. This was observed after a strenuous walk out between alkaline advocates and people who do not. At the end of the walkout, it was discovered that people who drank alkaline water had a decreased viscosity of 6.3  percent against those who do not that came up with increased viscosity of 3.6 percent.
further research is needed to prove other claims made by alkaline water advocates.
Alkaline Water, Natural or Artificial?
Natural alkaline water occurs from spring water. When water passes through the rock, it retains some minerals from the rock. Yet, there is an artificial source of alkaline called electrolysis. This is achieved by raising the PH of irregular water using an ionizer. This way, the molecules in the water are separated. The acidic water is discarded while the alkaline water is stored.
A study conducted by the World Health Organisation warns against consuming water with decreased mineral content regularly.
Where can you get Alkaline Water?
You can check with your local grocery or health food stores. It is also available online or in most large chain stores. However, it can also be made locally at home. By adding a squeeze of lemon or lime juice or drops of baking soda into a glass of water, you have increased its alkalinity.
How safe is Alkaline Water?
Consuming alkaline water is completely safe since it contains minerals. However, the issues with alkaline water are at its claims of treating some health conditions. Extra caution should be taken to avoid overuse of alkaline which will lead to mineral deficiency.
